It's one of the questions I get a lot. SAMRO, CAPASSO, SAMPRA, RiSA. They aren't the same thing, and knowing the difference matters when you're releasing music.

Making the track is the fun part. Registering the work is where things get slightly less exciting, but it matters if your music starts being used.

Mechanical rights relate to reproducing musical works, including certain digital uses. CAPASSO administers these rights for its members and represented repertoire.
Different rights sit in the sound recording. SAMPRA represents performers and record companies for certain neighbouring-rights uses in South Africa.
RiSA is involved in sound-recording industry administration, including ISRC registration services. It isn't another name for SAMRO or CAPASSO.
Write down who owns the composition and who owns the master recording. Keep the names and splits consistent. Record your track title, collaborators, release details and any identifying codes. Make sure samples and third-party contributions are cleared before you start submitting the track commercially.
Then check which organisations and registrations actually apply to your work. Registering with one organisation does not automatically cover every right. If a publisher or label is involved, check the agreements before submitting duplicate claims.
And remember, registration is administration, not a promise of royalties. The music still has to be used and the usage reported.
